AI Literacy: Responsible Use of GenAI

AI generated content detection

How to identify AI generated content?

AI Detectors

  • Multi-Format AI Content

  •  AI Text

  • AI Voice

What should be considered when using GenAI in education and research

  • Text generated by GenAI may appear human-like, but it does not indicate understanding. GenAI may reflect inaccurate, cultural or commercial biases, offensive and unethical materials.
  • Users should critically examine value orientations, cultural standards, and social customs. Also not assume its accuracy or understanding
  • Policymakers should address inequities due to widening divide in GenAI training and control.

  • Aware about the ownership protection in relation to GenAI.
  • Need to address legislative issues that may arise due to GenAI.
  • Aware that images or codes created with GenAI may infringe on someone else's intellectual property rights.
  • Aware that shared content created with GenAI can be exploited by other GenAI systems

The ROBOT Test

McGill University Library have developed the ROBOT test, which aids in assessing the legitimacy of the technology when reading about AI applications.

  • How reliable is the information available about the AI technology?
  • If it’s not produced by the party responsible for the AI, what are the author’s credentials? Bias?
  • If it is produced by the party responsible for the AI, how much information are they making available?
    • Is information only partially available due to trade secrets?
    • How biased is they information that they produce?
  • What is the goal or objective of the use of AI?
  • What is the goal of sharing information about it?
    • To inform?
    • To convince?
    • To find financial support?
  • What could create bias in the AI technology?
  • Are there ethical issues associated with this?
  • Are bias or ethical issues acknowledged?
    • By the source of information?
    • By the party responsible for the AI?
    • By its users?
  • Who is the owner or developer of the AI technology?
  • Who is responsible for it?
    • Is it a private company?
    • The government?
    • A think tank or research group?
    • Who has access to it?
    • Who can use it?
  • Which subtype of AI is it?
  • Is the technology theoretical or applied?
  • What kind of information system does it rely on?
  • Does it rely on human intervention?

Citing GenAI

While educational institutions and style guides are developing policies regarding the use and citation of content from GenAI in academic works, guidelines are still evolving. It is suggested to refer to existing style guide recommendations for citing GenAI content.
