String quartet Made in Berlin: A musical European journey
They are not native Berliners, but feel as if they are thanks to their profession: three string players from the Berliner Philharmoniker founded the ensemble Made in Berlin in 2016 – together with violinist Ray Chen, first prize winner of the Concours Reine Elisabeth Competition. In this concert, they present an eclectic programme with works by Hugo Wolf, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Eugène Ysaÿe and Maurice Ravel.
Zubin Mehta and Yefim Bronfman
Zubin Mehta and Yefim Bronfman have been associates for many years. Here, they perform Béla Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 2, and Zubin Mehta conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fourth, which depicts the composer’s suffering in the world, but also celebrates the joys of life at the end. The Romantic prelude is Schumann’s Genoveva Overture.
Kirill Petrenko conducts Tchaikovsky and two world premieres
Kirill Petrenko continues his acclaimed Tchaikovsky interpretations with the symphonic poem Francesca da Rimini. He also introduces two composers, both of whom have found their own distinctive musical language. Julia Wolfe draws her inspiration from classical, folk and rock music, creating works with magnetic appeal. The music of Lisa Streich is rich in delicate webs of sound, which are penetrated by powerful kinetic energy.
Emmanuelle Haïm conducts an early Handel oratorio
We have heard Emmanuelle Haïm several times with the Berliner Philharmoniker as an outstanding interpreter of the music of George Frideric Handel. This time, she conducts his early oratorio Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno (The triumph of Time and Disillusion), a work with intense emotion, delicate arias and operatic ensemble scenes. The story tells of a young person addicted to pleasure who finally realises how fleeting all outward beauty is – a timeless theme.
Kirill Petrenko conducts Mendelssohn’s “Elijah”
“Strong, zealous, even evil and angry and dark” – this is how Felix Mendelssohn imagined the biblical prophet Elijah, the protagonist of his oratorio of the same name. Full of drama, the composer portrays a man who struggles to convert the people to the true faith – in vain, as he is forced to realise at the end. Under the direction of Kirill Petrenko, the distinguished baritone Christian Gerhaher takes on the role of Elijah.
